Mr Comey's attorney submitted the response on his behalf in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week. The defense lawyer announced he would attempt to have the case terminated for various causes including that his defendant, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being targeted. James Comey was indicted just days after Trump pressured his top legal official to proceed against him. Judicial Process In court on mid-week, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald informed the judge they aimed to file multiple motions to dismiss the case before a legal hearing, stating the legal action was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was improperly assigned to handle the proceedings. James Comey's legal matter was initially handled by Erik Siebert, who resigned under scrutiny from the former president after his probe into a different opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to initiate prosecution. Courtroom Atmosphere James Comey appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the courtroom on Wednesday, conversing with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was joined by his spouse, his wife and daughter his daughter, a US lawyer who the previous administration dismissed. Upon hearing to the court state his legal protections and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, Mr Comey was inquired if he understood the charges. "Yes your honour. Thank you," he told the court. Previous Events James Comey was the FBI Director from four years and was dismissed about a few months into the former president's first term as president. At the period, Mr Comey was overseeing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between Moscow and the presidential campaign. Throughout his leadership, James Comey caused a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he declared just shortly prior to the national vote that he was examining presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were never brought, resulting in negative feedback from conservative politicians as well. Current Allegations Prosecutors claim Mr Comey lied to the legislature during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They say he misled the upper house by saying he had not authorized a person at the FBI to disclose to media organizations details about the FBI investigations. Government lawyers also charge Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, obstruct and impede" the panel by giving misleading testimony to it. Personal Comments Through a recording Mr Comey posted to his online platform after he was charged, he stated he was not guilty and accused the former president of behaving like a "tyrant". "We have known for considerable time that there are consequences to standing up to Mr Trump," he stated. "We refuse to live on our kneeling." "I am not guilty," he stated further. "So let's have a court case." The charges against Mr Comey came after Trump shared on online platforms calling for his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, charge James Comey and additional individuals.
