Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he barely escaped a potentially fatal collision during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two marshals crossed the track directly in front of him

The alarming incident took place on the third rotation when safety workers were spotted on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an early pitstop to change his damaged front wing

Competitor's Live Reaction

Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson spoke to his team engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Could you believe what happened? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was observing"

"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and suddenly there were two guys running across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was so dangerous"

Track Safety Questioned

"Evidently there's been a miscommunication somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We fail to grasp how on a active circuit track officials can be allowed to just run across the track like that. I don't understand the reason, I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but this must never be repeated"

Official Investigation Underway

The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the events

"Following a turn one incident, track officials was advised that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the FIA

"On lap three, marshals were informed and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once all cars had passed"

"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send marshals were rescinded and a safety warning flag was shown in that area"

"We are still investigating what occurred following that moment"
